Event photography is all about being in the right place at the right time, capturing moments that convey the story and spirit of an event. This year, I had the pleasure of photographing the EHPA Symposium in Torquay – a gathering rich with knowledge, networking, and a uniquely creative evening. From photographing inspiring guest speakers and buzzing sponsor booths to a memorable dinner event with an Under the Sea theme, the symposium was a photographer’s playground.
The Conference Room: Focused And Inspiring
The conference sessions at the EHPA Symposium were the heartbeat of the event, featuring insightful talks from industry leaders. Photographing the guest speakers was a lesson in capturing both focus and passion, as these experts shared valuable knowledge about environmental challenges with the audience. It was essential to catch them in moments of genuine expression: the powerful gestures, the bright smiles as they engaged with the crowd, and the quiet moments when the audience listened intently.
Photographing in a conference room presented its own set of challenges, especially with lighting. To keep the shots natural and avoid intruding on the speaker’s presence, I used a long lens and using the lighting of the stage rather than my flash. I focused on capturing the keynote speakers’ charisma as well as the audience reactions to highlight the synergy in the room. These images would later allow attendees to relive those impactful moments.
Capturing Connections At The Sponsor Booths
Between sessions, symposium guests mingled in the exhibition area, exploring sponsor booths. This was a vibrant space where professionals made connections, discovered new products, and engaged in discussions. The goal was to document these interactions candidly, preserving the genuine smiles, warm handshakes, and the engaged expressions of people exploring what each booth had to offer.
Here, the lighting and spacing were a bit more dynamic, so I relied on natural light and occasional fill flash to bring out details without overexposing the scene. By focusing on the details of booths, from the sponsor banners to interesting product shots, I was able to create a rich visual story of this bustling networking space.
Evening Dinner: Under The Sea
The symposium closed with an Under the Sea themed dinner, and the creativity on display was incredible. Guests transformed into mermaids, jelly fish and all sorts of sea critters. Capturing this vibrant part of the event meant photographing both the intricate costumes and the lively atmosphere.
Photographing this event was mainly focused on capturing the candid laughter and creative costumes at the event, showing the guests having a good time.
The dinner scene was full of laughter, animated conversations, and fun interactions – all fantastic ingredients for candid photos that perfectly encapsulated the joy of the evening.
Conclusion: Capturing the EHPA Experience
Photographing the EHPA Symposium in Torquay was a rewarding experience that required agility and creativity to capture the event’s range of moods and moments. From the inspiring talks and the focused energy at the sponsor booths to the playfulness of the evening dinner, each part of the event brought something unique to capture. As a photographer, my aim was to freeze those moments that resonated most, creating visual memories that tell the complete story of the EHPA Symposium.
